  • Good morning, Barbara, Sarah, Kathleen, and Patti! Or, should I say, Good morning, Collaborators!
You’re all interested in working with me to put together a review of the concept of reciprocity. I also asked Lisa Burton (UMN, works with Andy Furco) if she would be interested. She’s excited about the project but can’t participate right now: she’s got a baby on the way and a small child at home, and is also close to birthing a dissertation. She will gladly review the article once we’ve drafted it to provide feedback.
I don’t think you all know one another, so please feel free to introduce yourselves. Basically, four of us are graduate students, and Patti is excited about the project. I have four goals, (upon which I invite your thoughts):1) Increase the depth of my understanding of reciprocity because it will figure into my dissertation work2) Contribute to our field more nuanced and examined understandings of reciprocity (in light of multiple disciplinary influences)3) Carve out an opportunity to collaborate with you all, from whom I seem to learn well and I highly respect. You’ve each challenged me in great ways.4) Get a publication.
How to proceed? I think we should try to schedule a conference call for the first week in December. Can you give me your availability for the first few days of that week?
Until then, perhaps we could email some of the following to one another: (a) what are some of the characterizations of reciprocity – and their accompanying references - we’re using in our own work (or have used in the past? (b) what would be your ideal timeline for this project? (c) what disciplinary fields do we each draw upon? By doing this part via email, I think we can gather information on where we are now, what our timeline might be, and what gaps exist within our knowledge base.
I need to let you know this is my first project of this kind. If any of you have a better suggestion for how we might proceed, or have done something similar, please insert that guidance as soon as possible. I’m taking the position of learner in this process.
Can you tell that I’m excited? What a great opportunity to work with you! Thanks for coming on-board.
Best,Lina
